Anna's Goat

ased on a true World War II story, this is the tale of Anna and her sister, born as refugees whose parents were forced to leave their homeland. Their new life is very hard. The adults toil in the factory, leaving no one to look after the children until the women find a solution--a nanny goat, which helps the children feel "safe and warm and full as summer." Eventually, the family returns home, only to find the town reduced to rubble. The town's children search for treasures, with Anna finding hers in an old cloth, half nibbled by the goat but full of memories of the animal's warmth and comfort. The remarkable illustrations, done with Conte crayons and colored paper, capture at once the warmth of the goat and the coldness of the times, as well as the amusing antics of the unique "nanny." Good for reading aloud to groups or as a lap-sit book.
